Year 2005

The Czech campaign focuses its activities on September 2006 IFIs annual summit in Singapure. The campaign includes influencing media and the public through brochures, posters, direct lobbying, seminars, publications, white bands' distribution, exhibitions, supplements in newspapers and so on.

The main tool of information will be the website www.ceskoprotichudobe.cz. As the campaign started late and Czech Republic is not a member of G8, the July action will be lighter and more modest. However the website, the white bands and penetration to media should happen at that time. In the second half of the year we are going to focus our actvity on lobbying the politicians through demands formulated by the steering committee (similar to those used worldwide and modified accrodingly to the needs in the Czech society).

The Czech participation in Global Call to Action Against Poverty

ČESKO PROTI CHUDOBĚ or Czechia against Poverty is the brand for Czech Republic’s participation in the worldwide Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP).
The ČESKO PROTI CHUDOBĚ campaign will be culminating during September 9-10, 2005 just before the New York UN Millenium+5 Summit through street actions in Prague, Brno, Karlovy Vary, Plzeň, Litvínov, Hradec Králové, Vsetín and Olomouc. White bands, information materials and postcards will be available at information booths. The campaign representatives will be ready to discuss various issues related to poverty in the world with passers-by. In many places there will be supporting programme including concerts and screenings of documentaries.

Primary aim of the ČESKO PROTI CHUDOBĚ campaign is to target wide public and politicians. The long-term dialogue with politicians and government is vital for keeping-up the topic of poverty in the world and fight against it high on the agenda in the Czech Republic. In order to ensure it organisations involved in the campaign put together a list of 10 main demands.

The ČESKO PROTI CHUDOBĚ campaign started in January 2005 when twenty nine organisations and think-tanks formed a nation-wide civil society coalition, inspired then by similar coalitions in EU and G8 countries. The coalition members cut across a wide variety of sectors, such as relief and development, human rights, environment, fair trade, gender, volunteering or globalisation and represent all geographical regions of the Czech Republic.

The coalition has so far organised dozens of seminars, lectures, discussions, workshops and journalist and civil servant trainings in order to raise awareness of the top demands and issue of poverty among target groups of the campaign The campaign has been supported by various personalities from Czech culture and show business spheres including football players Milan Baroš and Tomáš Ujfaluši, musicians Richard Krajčo and Jan Muchow or actors Ivana Chýlková and Jan Kraus.

During GCAP public hearing at European Parliament in Strasbourg on July 4-6 before G8 Summit in Gleneagles the ČESKO PROTI CHUDOBĚ campaign was presented and received support from Czech MEPs throughout all the parties as well as the Commissioner Vladimír Špidla

Czech white bands are made from natural hemp in sheltered workshops and imprinted with www.ceskoprotichudobe.cz inscription. Apart from the white bands two versions of handouts are distributed in wide public: A detailed brochure is designed to provide full information to media and other multipliers of the campaign aims. The other handout is in the form of postcard addressed to Czech Prime Minister and Czech President calling for more activity in fight against poverty both domestically and internationally.
Visually the ČESKO PROTI CHUDOBĚ campaign presents itself in the press and electronic media, including main newspapers, spots in Czech Public TV and Czech Public Radio broadcasting, and in public places. The main information gate of the campaign is its website www.ceskoprotichudobe.cz.

Activity of coalition will not finish with Millenium+5 Summit. Campaign will continue in different form for the rest of the year 2005. In this second phase the campaign will aim at elected political representatives, public administration and local governments. In reality it will mean that ČESKO PROTI CHUDOBĚ will become a watchdog focused on monitoring, public control and participation in political processes leading to implementation of Millennium Development Goals.

There are 2,2 billions of children, of which 1 billion lives below the limit of poverty. Every second child on this planet is deprived of childhood as a consequence of poverty ? threatened by malnutrition or hunger, AIDS and other diseases. Goal 1
